The ask

The Edge was commissioned in 2024 by Bigcat Customs as a complete plug-and-play DJ booth — a self-contained stage lighting experience that ships, sets up, and runs without a separate lighting rig or operator behind the scenes. What makes The Edge distinct in the catalogue is what got built into it: this is where Mystic Owl found its permanent home, alongside the third prime piece from our igNIGHT 2020 installation. Around those existing artworks, we custom-built folding side panels to fill out the rest of the booth — and those panels became one of our key R&D explorations into using resin to merge multiple different materials inside a single panel. Once delivered, the piece moved into Bigcat's hands for their own use; whether it's still in active rotation is up to them at this point.

What we were going for

The Edge is two ideas working together. The first is plug-and-play — that a complete stage lighting experience can live inside a single physical object, so there's no rig to design, no operator to brief, no lighting console to learn. Roll the booth in, plug it in, and the show is already programmed into the furniture. The second idea is consolidation: rather than build the booth from new parts, we built it around existing LightBox artworks — Mystic Owl, the third igNIGHT prime — so the piece carries history forward instead of starting from scratch. The custom folding side panels are where the new craft sits. Each panel is a resin-bonded composite — multiple materials suspended and merged into one surface — and that technique opened a door we've kept walking through since.

What we learned

The Edge is the project that proved plug-and-play stage lighting could be its own product category for us. Up to that point, our installation work was mostly bespoke — every piece a one-off, every event a different rig, every show a custom programming session. The Edge collapsed all of that into a single object you can roll into a venue and turn on. That changed what I knew was possible to offer. The other lasting thing was the side panels. Resin-bonding mixed materials into a single composite face was an experiment when we started, and by the time we finished it was a technique — one we've kept reaching for in builds since. And on a quieter note, this was the project that gave Mystic Owl and the third igNIGHT prime a permanent stage. Earlier pieces don't always get a home; these two did.

Access & sensory notes

The Edge is a working DJ booth, so its primary viewing context is live music environments — clubs, parties, private events — with high sound levels, crowd density, and other event lighting in play. The piece itself runs programmed multi-layer LED animations across the side panels and integrated artworks; the patterns are designed for a music environment and can include faster, beat-responsive sequences. People with photosensitivity should expect dynamic light effects when the booth is active, including potential strobing depending on how the operator runs it. The piece is currently in the hands of Bigcat Customs and not on permanent public display — encounters with it depend on whichever events they bring it to.
